Description
An Intriguing Likely Fantasy Gold Quinarius (3.3 grams). The obverse exhibits a head facing left of an unknown male with the legend P METELLUS. The reverse bears the legend PIVS C S surrounding what appears to be either a temple or circus. We believe the portrait is intended to be that of Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius (circa 130-63 BC). A pleasing VF that features a generally smooth and balanced appearance with hints of mint lustre nestled in the most protected areas. Metellus was a Roman statesman and general with a long and influential history. He was a strong supporter of Sulla and a devout leader of the Optimates (the conservative faction during the last century of the Republic). His biography makes for fascinating reading and we greatly encourage those interested to research his career. Though we have shown this coin to ancient specialists, thus leading us to describe this piece as we have, we encourage all bidders to perform their own due diligence as to the importance of this highly intriguing coin! Est. $200.
