Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur (KPM), Berlin, Germany, circa 1900. Porcelain Plaque depicting the Vestal Virgin, Germany, late 19th century, after the original by Angelica Kauffmann (Swiss, 1741-1807), oval shape with polychrome enameled portrait of a maiden holding a lit oil lamp. Great detail and expression was given to the young virgins face. Impressed KPM F 5 and sceptre on back. Oval plaque measures 9x11. Rectangular gildframe 14x18. "Portrat einer Dame als Vestalin." In the 18th century it was common for young women of noble origin to have portraits painted ofthem dressed as Vestal Virgins, since their characteristics corresponded to the contemporary image of women. Vestal Virgins were priestesses of the Roman goddess Vesta, goddess of home and hearth. They were alsopreservationists of the sacred fire and had to pledge chastity, which is why on most representations they are shown wearing white robes and veils.
