Description: Desirable circa 19th century classically styled maker marked "Alexander Sheffield" English made horn handle Bowie knife. 16" in length overall with an 11" clip point blade.Â
Only a small percentage of 19th century Bowie knives crafted specifically to sell into the fashion established by Jim Bowie were made in the United States. The majority during the period were manufactured in Sheffield, England that had a much more established manufacturing base for cutlery at the time. "Alexander" was the name of the period US based importer for a line of Sheffield knives. The handle has horn scales, silver inlaid un-engraved escutcheon ending in a crown shaped metal pommel cap
Condition: Excellent showing period use
Provenance: Alexander Sheffield C. 1850-1878. R.H. Alexander is first listed in the New York City Directory in 1850, under "Hardware & Cutlery, Importers of." He was located at 88 Platt Street. In 1851, the firm was R.H. Alexander & Barton, and had moved to 88 John. In 1853, the firm moved to 6 Platt, where they stayed through 1860.
