Description
Sabine, TX- City of Sabine $500 January 24, 1839
The city of Sabine was founded in 1836 by Sam Houston and Philip A. Sublette. It was first called Sabine City. The town name was changed to Sabine Pass in 1839 apparently shortly after the issue of this note. This piece is technically a stock certificate that was redeemable for land in the town, but it also served as a local circulating medium of exchange.Â
