This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the U.S. 22c American Horses stamps issued September 25, 1985.

One of the softest and most gentle-flowing gaits of all horses belongs to the Tennessee Walking Horse. Developed by Kentucky planters, this horse had the unique ability to pace itself at a half-run, half-walk, creating a gliding ride. The planters soon recognized the uniqueness of this horse's stride and the Tennessee Walking Horse became a popular saddle horse all across the South. The handsome Tennessee Walking Horse continues to be one America's most popular breeds of horses. Indeed, the horse is considered an ideal mount for many beginning riders who prefer the horse's gentle disposition.
