Description
Featured in this lot is this early Navajo Third Phase Chief's Blanket pattern wool rug, circa 1900-1950's. This rug shows naturally dyed decorations of striped and stepped designs, with crosses seen on either side and a large Hubbell Cross medallion decoration set to a red field. Chief’s Patter Blankets are of the most desired patterns with circa 19th Century examples commanding over 1.5 million at auction. Noted archeologist and Navajo weaving authority Joe Ben Wheat once wrote, “The Chief’s blanket is one of the finest achievements in Navajo weaving.” The condition of this rug is fair and it really shows its age with wear some damage to the rug itself. The measurements of this rug are 79" x 50".
