Item Details
Description
Cheticamp Hooked Rug ca. 1940. Vintage hand hooked rug made in traditional Cheticamp style on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Cheticamp rug tradition began with rag hooking. Women would take old clothing, cut it into long strips, and hook those fabric strips into rugs. Rug-making became a cottage industry, and an important though not lucrative income source for Cheticamp families. Through the off season fishermen would help their wives hook rugs that sold for a fraction of their worth in labor hours.

21 x 36 inches.

Purchased in Nova Scotia 1974; Private collection New England.

Condition
Good condition considering age, the bottom of the rug has been patched and repaired.

NOTE: If documentation is not listed, the lot is sold without documents.

Please refer to our Terms and Conditions prior to bidding. Color fidelity of photos presented is not guaranteed. Lack of a condition statement does not imply that a lot is perfect. Please examine photos, read descriptions, and contact the Gallery with any questions prior to bidding. All sales are final.
