Description
Viceroyalty school; Nueva Granda, Peru, late 17th century."Archangel".Oil on canvas.Presents repainting, holes and varnish. It preserves the original canvas.Size: 122.5 x 86 cm.The work shows us an Archangel, located in front of the viewer who turns his face and raises his arm preventing the devil, who is behind him, can advance. On his left side, a little love, claims the attention of the protagonist trying to get him to lift him up in his arms. In the Catholic religion only three archangels are recognized, Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. It is worth mentioning that, during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianizing the indigenous peoples. The local painters were modeled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of types and iconography. The most frequent models were the harquebusier angels and the triangular virgins, however, in the first years of the 19th century, already in times of independence and political opening of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity.
