Description
The "Vitenberg Houses" is a small neighborhood on the outskirts of the "100 gates-Mea Shearim" neighborhood. It was established in 1885 with the donation of Moses Vitenberg. It is also called "Moses Gates". Moses Vitenberg was the president of Habbad Hasdics in Jerusalem, he was a rich merchant from the Russian empire. Not having kids he decided to invest his money in property funds in Jerusalem.
The rent in the neighborhood was of a very small amount and all the revenue was dedicated to charity and grace. There were 39 houses and one synagogue build in a square structure around a courtyard with a cistern. Vitenberg wanted that the revenue from his property will be able to maintain 10 scholars that will learn all day bible and will bring to the neighborhood a good name and high status.
