Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A fine collection of 5 labrets or lip plugs exhibiting an attractive minimalist design, all hand-knapped from jet-black obsidian, and polished to a lustrous finish. The facial jewelry presents with a wide cylindrical body surmounted by a sloped face, and a drilled hole beneath the body allowed the wearer to fasten the back while the plug was in their lip. One labret is not drilled, perhaps unfished. When held to the light each exhibits a lovely semi-translucency on the thinner areas. All are relatively similar in size. Size: 1.2" L x 0.675" W (3 cm x 1.7 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
