Description
DESCRIPTION: Steuben Oriental poppy glass vase in a rose to opaline color.
Optic ribbed, iridized lead glass.
Reference:
Shape # 6501, p. 282 Paul V. Gardner.
Pictured p. 47 of Objects of Desire: The Art of Frederick Carder by Alan Shovers.
See Fig. 10.19 at p. 219 for an example of Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass by Thomas P. Dimitroff.
“Both Oriental Poppy and Oriental Jade were available in iridized or non-iridized versions” fn in Fig. 5.28 at p. 124 of Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass by Thomas P. Dimitroff.
“In this opulent decanter dating from the extravagant ‘roaring’ twenties, Carder combined his ever-popular iridized surface with a base glass that has a bi-colored appearance. Although in its controlled, curving profile and reflects a basic style upon which Carder had always relied, it also has qualities relating to the contemporary Art Deco style. Its ribbed form, for instance, emphasizes the linear design qualities that were integral to Art Deco. “ ”The variegated color relies upon the property of certain glass formulas to change color depending upon the amount of heat they received during the fabrication process. In other words, this bi-colored appearance does not result from the use of two colors of glass, but from varying the thickness of the glass. ” “Carder’s Jade has a particularly rich and appealing quality, derived in part from the surface iridization, as seen.” Collector’s Choice Review, Number 43 from Rockwell Museum.
Several Oriental Jade pieces nicely pictured at fig. 49, p. 90 of Frederick Carder: Portrait of a Glassmaker by Paul V. Gardner.
Another group feature at Plate XXX A of Gardner’s, The Glass of Frederick Carder.
