Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, late Uruk to Jemdet Nasr period, ca. 3100 to 2900 BCE. An impressive pair of hand-carved alabaster jars from ancient Mesopotamia, each presenting a hemispherical body with a round base, thick walls, a ridged shoulder, and an annular rim, all sitting upon a low, discoid foot. Both elegant vessels boast creamy hues of white, beige, and light peach, naturally mottled across their surfaces, nicely complementing their graceful forms, as well as a pair of incised rings surrounding their rims. One of the vessels is fit with a petite, circular lid featuring a point raised at the center as a handle with an annular drill hole. A series of risen horizontal bands is present on their interiors, left from when they were drilled out to be hollow. An impressive pair of examples from ancient Mesopotamia!
