A plate from the St. Alexander Nevskii Order Service Imperial Porcelain Factory, Period of Alexander II (1855-1881)
With undulating moulded rim and double fine moulded inner ring, the centre with the Star of the Order, the border decorated with the red Sash and Cross, 23.5 cm diam., underglaze green cipher and red Hermitage inventory number Г.Ч./ 7604.
Footnotes
Provenance:
With A la Vieille Cité (paper label to the reverse)
This service, along with those of the Orders of St. George, Andrew, and Vladimir, was originally produced by the Gardner Factory in the late 18th century, commissioned by Catherine II. During the reign of Alexander II, the Imperial Porcelain Factory was commissioned to produce additions to the service. Unlike those originally produced by the Gardner Factory, which were painted, these additions were transfer decorated and filled with polychrome colours by hand, of which the present plate is an example. For comparable examples see Marvin C. Ross, Russian Porcelains (1968), plate 15, cat. no. 67.
