James Cook was a merchant involved in wholesale and retail hardware business in New York, N.Y. and Buffalo by family repute. Resided New York, N.Y. early in life and later in Morristown, N.J. Painting provenance through descent: James Cook Freeman of Chicago (dates unknown); his daughter Grace Lamb Freeman, (1884-1941) m. 1913 Sven Svenningson (1884-1934); their son Freeman Svenningson of Montreal (1914-1976); to S. Svenningson, present owner, Bancroft, ON.
