Description
[PAINE, Thomas] - R. WATSON (1737-1816). An Apology for the Bible, in a Series of Letters, Addressed to Thomas Paine ... Second Philadelphia Edition. Philadelphia: James Carey, 1796. 8vo. 80pp. Disbound.
Watson's response to Thomas Paine's The Age of Reason, Part II..
Richard Watson was an Anglican bishop and academic who wrote several notable political pamphlets. He held several clerical appointments in England until he served as the Bishop of Llandaff from 1782 until his death in 1816.
This work is Watson's response to Thomas Paine's book, The Age of Reason, Part II, which sought to catalogue and date the writings of the books of the Bible, show that they could not have been written by their supposed authors, and debunk them as myths and fables. In this series of eight letters, Watson lays out a fervent defense of the Bible and thoroughly responds to Paine's criticisms one by one.
