Description
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a tall, cylindrical form with a round but stable base, gently tapered walls, a protruding head, a conical spout, and an arching, bridge-shaped handle. The highly burnished vessel has a cream-hued ground and depicts a seated warrior holding a trophy head in his left hand and a striated spear in his right. His elongated head bears a face with a protruding nose, a minimalist beard surrounding full lips, a corded black coiffure, and deep red triangles beneath his eyes indicative of facial tattooing. An abstract anthropomorphic creature along the verso features a series of multi-colored trophy heads, human legs and one arm, and a singular eye along the midsection. A hole atop the warrior's head enables air to escape when air is blown into the spout. Size: 4.05" Diameter x 7.625" H (10.3 cm x 19.4 cm)
