Item Details
Description
Italian School, first half of the 17th Century, "Immaculate Conception".Oil on copper.Measurements: 29 x 20,5 cm.The devotional image presents the Virgin within a break of glory, with the moon under her feet and "clothed with the sun", thus alluding to the apparition of the woman in the Apocalypse of St. John. She is surrounded by putti holding different attributes, some of them coming from the lauretan litanies. The latter are forms of praise or supplication addressed to Mary and prayed by the Catholic faithful usually after the rosary. "Mirror of Justice", "Gate of Heaven", "Ivory Tower" are some of the resources used by the artist, thus creating a complex iconographic program typical of the 16th century that proclaims Mary as conceived without original sin, a theme that was passionately debated by Christianity before it was proclaimed dogma of faith in 1854.In stylistic terms, the painting can be placed geographically in central Italy, the putti recalling, for example, the models of Federico Barocci.
