Description
New Spanish or Peruvian school, late 18th century."Flight into Egypt."Oil on canvas.Vintage frame.Features restorations and patches. It precises cleaning.Measurements: 82 x 61 cm; 88 x 67 cm (frame).Inscribed in the Novo-Hispanic or Peruvian school of the late 18th century, the canvas in question represents the biblical theme of the flight to Egypt, a very frequent episode in Christian art, although it is only mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew (2:13-15). The flight to Egypt is an episode very treated in art, whose repercussion crossed national borders and reached the Spanish colonies. The episode is often used to identify the Holy Family with those disadvantaged by emigration and political repression. The story of the New Testament, very brief and typical of the Gospel of Matthew, narrates how an angel appears in a dream to St. Joseph and tells him that he must flee to Egypt with Mary and the Child, because King Herod was looking for him to kill him. Joseph obeys, and after a while he is ordered to return, in a similar manner. The evangelist himself sees in the episode the fulfillment of an Old Testament prophecy: "out of Egypt I called my son" (Hosea 11:1). In the apocryphal Gospels and in the later Christian tradition, this episode will be expanded with a multitude of anecdotes and miracles that occurred during the journey. It is worth mentioning that, during the Spanish colonial domination, a mainly religious painting was developed, aimed at Christianizing the indigenous peoples. The local painters were modeled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of types and iconography. The most frequent models were the harquebusier angels and the triangular virgins, however, in the first years of the 19th century, already in times of independence and political opening of some of the colonies, several artists began to represent a new model of painting with its own identity.
