Description
CREVAUX JULES: (1847-1882) French Explorer, Doctor and former Soldier. Best known for his explorations of French Guiana and the Amazon. Crevaux and all his expedition members were clubbed to death by the Toba Indians tribe when exploring the upper course of the Pilcomayo river in Bolivia. Rare A.L.S., Jules Crevaux, two pages, 8vo, Lorquin, Alsace-Lorraine, 21st October 1881, to `Mon cher Maitre´, in French. Crevaux explains to his correspondent, describing himself as `your devoted student´, his expedition plan and what would end being his last travel exploration, and states in part `..travel from Rio de la Plata to the Amazon, ascending to Paraguay, then descending the almost unknown Tapajos..´ Crevaux explains that because summer is starting in South-America he intends to leave France before six weeks in order to `..enjoy and benefit of the good water to go up this grandiose river..´ Letters of Crevaux are rare after his early death at the age of 35. The present letter explains what was going to be his travel expedition plans, and ended with his assassination. A letter of very interesting content. VG
