BERNOULLI JOHANN II: (1710-1790) Jean Bernoulli. Mathematician. He succeeded his father Johann Bernoulli as professor of mathematics in the University of Basel. Bernoulli received multiple awards of the Academy of Sciences of Paris. His two sons Johann and Jakob are he last noted mathematicians of the Bernoulli family who contributed substantially to the development of mathematics and physics. Rare A.L.S., `J.Bernoulli´, two pages, 4to, Basel, 29th October 1767, to an unidentified colleague and mathematician, in French. Bernoulli explains to his correspondent that a disciple of him, mathematician, will visit him, stating in part `..the young man got in the past mathematic lessons with me during six months or even more, he is capable to resolve quite easily algebra problems, has been through geometry…he started with the infinitesimal calculus..´ Bernoulli further suggests that his correspondent makes a test to his recommended disciple in order to better know his knowledge level.
