British, circa 1740, depicting a young man courting a shepherdess sitting under a tree, in a pastoral setting with dog, deer, and sheep in the foreground and church and house in the background, executing in wool tent stitch with silk accents, sight 24 x 20 in.; probably 18th century stained wood frame with gilt liner, 31 x 26-1/4 in.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dudley and Constance GodfreyCondition
possibly reduced from a chair back, two areas of loss above church, loss to upper right corner, later institching to house near right border, overall stitch loss, fading, and toning, not examined out of frame; frame with minor abrasions
