Item Details
Description
J. Watts (19th Century Engraver)Botanical Colored Engraving on Heavy Weight PaperText along lower border from left to right lower border reads ‘N. Hart del. Pub by J. Ridgeway, 169 Piccadilly Aug 1.1827, J. Watts. K.’. Plate number to the upper right corner reads ‘1081’.J. Watts was one of the principal British etchers who produced original etchings and engravings after M. Hart's designs for The Botanical Register and Edward's Botanical Register. Unfortunately, not much information is available on many of the 19th century botanical artists because their works were primarily created for scientific and educational purposes. Nevertheless, these etchings were so specialized and meticulous that they have left behind some of the finest records and portrayals of the 19th century floral world. We have now come to regard these engravings as wonderful works of early botanical art.Piece depicts a colorful specimen in blues and reds with detailing in its structure. Piece is double matted in grey and creme with border lines applied to the secondary matting. Piece professionally matted and framed in a gilt wood frame. Frame measures 20.25 x 18.25 inches. No other apparent labels or markings to piece. Not examined out of frame. Evident creasing to paper, some areas of discoloration. Some imperfections to frame. No evidence or prominence of the piece being an original. Engraving is one of two being sold separately in this auction. Property of Greenwich Conn. Estate.J.
