Description
"Haitian Artwork by Artist Gerard Paul"Gerard Paul was born in 1943 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Orphaned at the age of six, he was a cabinet maker, a mason, and a house painter. By age 14 he was apprenticed to a carpenter and then to a bricklayer and a house painter. In 1963 while working at the residence of the German Ambassador, Gerard showed his first paintings to the wife of the Ambassador, Mrs. Malsy-Minsk. The Ambassador, who built a large collection of Paul's work, was quick to encourage him in his unique naive style by providing the paints and canvas. He has exhibited both in Haiti and abroad, with his work being treasured by many Haitian art collectors. Pieces can be found in the permanent collections of the Musée d’Art Haitien and the Milwaukee Museum of Art.This oil on board piece measures approximately 17 x 25 inches.
