Description
East Asia, China, late Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A large leaded-brass piriform vessel with twin curved phoenix or dragon head handles, and a lovely cloisonne patterning across the body. The vessel rests on a foot with a slightly recessed base. A relief stamp with several characters within a square are displayed in the center. Around the base is an overlapping incised pattern of semicircles that represent stylized waves, which is repeated around the neck as well. Above the foot are five colorful and attractive cloisonne registers housing floral, geometric, and stylized mythical zoomorphic forms in aqua blue, green, cobalt blue, crimson, umber, yellow, black, and white. At the center are two phoenixes with lotus blossoms. There are two bas-relief appliques of phoenix heads on each side of the neck with their tongues creating the handle that connects to the shoulder of the vessel. This is a beautiful piece with a colorful decorative and symbolic program! Size: 8" W x 12.5" H (20.3 cm x 31.8 cm)
