Description
Antique 3 piece Napoleonic Prisoner of War sterling silver tea set. Dedicated to Danish commander Captain Hawkins, “Humanity softens the miseries of War-Mennefkierlighed lindrer Krigens Ulkker”, documented in “The Liberty of the Water of the Thamer” by J. Rudland Hearn, pages 58, 59, 60, copy included. Inscription reads “To Captn. Edward Hawkins of the British Navy, this small mark of esteem and gratitude. Sentiments universally produced by his disinterested kindness towards the Danish Prisoners of War under his Care is respectfully presented by a few of their countrymen. London, November, 1810.” Three graduated pieces sterling silver, repeating ribbed design trim and shoulder, these squatty serving pieces rest on ball feet, surmounted with conforming finial. Hallmarks include silver quality Lion passant guardant, Makers mark “HS”, attributed to Samuel or Henry Sardet, London Duty mark, and silver date mark “P”. Tea Kettle 20.14 ozt, 6” x 11 ¾” (15.7cm x 30.3cm), Waste Bowl 8.83 ozt, 4” x 8” (10.5cm x 20.8cm), Cream Pitcher 5.76 ozt, 3 ¾” x 6 ¼” (10cm x16.4cm).
