Description
"Doctor Zhivago", by Boris Pasternak, authorized revised English translation, published by Pantheon, New York, 1958. First BOMSC edition printed from the plates of the trade edition. Both editions look identical. The points of BOMSC are: no price on the front flap of the dust jacket, and small impressed dot on the backboard. [The first printing of the trade edition was issued in July; First BOMSC edition issued one month later]
In the grand tradition of the epic novel, Boris Pasternaks masterpiece brings to life the drama and immensity of the Russian Revolution through the story of the gifted physician-poet, Zhivago; the revolutionary, Strelnikov; and Lara, the passionate woman they both love. Caught up in the great events of politics and war that eventually destroy him and millions of others, Zhivago clings to the private world of family life and love, embodied especially in the magical Lara.
Due to the author's independent-minded stance on the October Revolution, Doctor Zhivago was refused publication in the USSR. At the instigation of Giangiacomo Feltrinelli, the manuscript was smuggled to Milan and published in 1957. Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature the following year, an event which embarrassed and enraged the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
The novel was made into a film by David Lean in 1965, and since then has twice been adapted for television, most recently as a miniseries for Russian TV in 2006. The novel Doctor Zhivago has been part of the Russian school curriculum since 2003, where it is read in 11th grade.
