Description
This is a superb, large, early idyllic view of Manchester surrounded by a natural setting. Many industrial buildings are shown by the Merrimac River. Sun rays slanting from clouds bath the city in light, and early autumn colors burnish some of the vegetation in the foreground to produce an overall effect of luminous tranquility. Bachelder, created this view of Manchester, soon after his move there in 1854. He published a total of 35 city views, and is also well known for his visual and documentary records of the Gettysburg battlefield.
