Wallace berman (1926-1976) was the center of the underground artist scene in post-war Los Angeles and arguably the most important artist of his era there. He created and distributed Semina, which is considered the first artist book in history, and the forerunner of a now robust tradition of artist publications. His brilliant deployment of the verifax machine in the making of collage made him a pioneer in the use of photo-reproduction technology in art. And his early sculptures, such as the one that got him arrested on obscenity charges at Ferus Gallery, helped earn him the sobriquet, godfather of west coast assemblage.
