Item Details
Description
North America, United States, West Virginia, Harpers Ferry, ca. 1843 CE. A fine percussion infantry musket with a steel barrel and wooden stock produced at the famous Harpers Ferry arsenal. The barrel and stock are a warm chocolate color with a rich patina. This musket has a percussion cap and was one of the earliest models produced to replace flintlocks. The lockplate is stamped with the maker’s mark of an eagle above “US” and behind the hammer is “Harpers Ferry 1843.” This is the US M-1842 which was military issued and these models were heavily used during the American Civil War. The barrel is characteristically thick, an intentional design choice for future modifications. A very fine musket that is a must for any American history collectors! Size: 46.6" L x 9" H (118.4 cm x 22.9 cm); (barrel): 30.8" L (78.2 cm); (bore): 0.69" W (1.8 cm)

Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection; ex-Jim Gordon collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
