Description
Central Asia, Nepal, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A beautiful cast brass statue of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara. He stands upon a hollow lotus pedestal wearing an elaborate ankle length garment that gracefully swirls outward from his legs and arms. Draped across his left shoulder and around his body is an upanayana, or sacred thread. One hand is held up, open palm, and the other is directed downwards with two fingers pointed outward making an apana mudra symbol. Avalokiteshvara is elaborately adorned with jewelry, and a lotus flower with a long stem rises from this left arm. His expression is serene with half closed eyes. Upon his head is an ornate headdress with a top knot, and a small figure seated in a cross-legged pose is upon his brow. A warm patina envelops the surface of this devotional bodhisattva which likely resided in a temple or shrine. Size: 4" W x 12" H (10.2 cm x 30.5 cm)
