***Auction Highlight*** 1860-d Dahlonega Medium D Gold Liberty Half Eagle $5 Graded ms63+ By SEGS. HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE AUCTION – Up for Auction is the penultimate half eagle from the Dahlonega Mint, coming from a mintage of 14,635 pieces. The issue is divided into two subtypes by mintmark size. The Large D variant, with two die varieties known, is rare. (less than 10 Known) The Medium D coin, with one variety known, represents the majority of the surviving 1860-D half eagles. Numismatic researcher and author Doug Winter estimates a survival of approximately one dozen Mint State 1860-D half eagles, although only 3 are finer than this example. This coin displays remarkably smooth, straw-gold surfaces with only faint handling hairlines evident in the fields. No singular abrasions are seen. Moreover, most of each side is sharply struck. Localized weakness appears only on the eagle's neck and the corresponding central portion of Liberty's neck curl. I have included 2 other examples for your comparison, both ms64 as no ms63 has ever come to Auction in the last 10 Years.
