Description
Two-piece carved walnut icebox, circa 3rd quarter 19th century, with key to upper cabinet marked Eagle Lock Co., Terryville, Conn. Tin box with door lined in copper and housed in an attractive walnut chest; upper doors with original fabric lining behind ornate iron panels, two sliding trays lined in copper (which pull out from the front and the right.) 61" H x 27" W x 14" D. *************** A very unusual early icebox. Iceboxes came into usage in the 1840s but were typically much more basic in their design and function -- often appearing much like the basic blocks of ice they were intended to contain. The present piece blends style with function, and it would have been made for a rather particular (and likely wealthy) patron. The sliding copper-lined trays would have been a perfect place to mix one's preferred libation. An attractive and interesting piece.
