HIGHLIGHT OF THE ENTIRE MONTH - Up for Auction is the incredibly sought and elusive 1853/4 Seated Liberty Quarter, Briggs 1-A, FS-1301 An intriguing variety, recognized by NGC, SEGS, PCGS, and the Guide Book. Briggs details the recutting of the date in his Encyclopedia. The 8 and 5 are recut right, and the 3 is punched over the remnants of what appears to be an errant 4. The right arrowhead is recut south, confirming the attribution. This variety is rarely seen in Mint State, and the present coin is the sole finest at SEGS and a half point behind the finest at NGC & PCGS. However, this coin will appeal to more than variety enthusiasts. This one-year Arrows and Rays type is always in high demand, and Near Gem examples of the Philadelphia issue are rare overall.This outstanding piece is boldly defined and exhibits well-preserved, frosty luster. Traces of light golden toning are most noticeable on the reverse, attesting to the originality of the surfaces.
