Item Details
Description
North America, United States, Ohio, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A fine tiger maple wood and iron percussion rifle made by Philip Schantz. The full stock rifle has an octagonal barrel with etched star shapes around the muzzle. A wooden ramrod fits into the groove with brass ramrod guides under the barrel. A brass trigger guard protects the double set triggers. The iron lock plate is stamped with a mark that might be for Steele and Warren of Albany New York. The top of the barrel is stamped with "PH SCHANTZ." The tiger flame maple stock and brass fittings make this a beautiful rifle to hang over the fireplace or doorway. Schantz was born in Germany in 1817 and immigrated to the United States and settled in Ohio sometime before 1850. As a gunsmith, he was perfectly situated to sell these rifles people traveling along the Erie canal or west to the Oregon Trail. Size: 53" L x 4" W (134.6 cm x 10.2 cm); bore size: 0.44" W (1.1 cm)
