Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sulawesi Island, Toraja people, ca. early 20th century CE. An amazing ritualistic canopy known as a kandaure comprised of thousands of glass seed beads strung and woven on fibrous threads. The overall form is that of an umbrella or lamp shade with a wide opening on the bottom and a lengthy fringe. The beads are vibrant hues of red, yellow, blue, green, black, and white. Suspended from the conical rim are strands of varying length strung with seed beads and knotted at the tips. The body portion is woven to create diamond shaped patterns and interlocking geometric motifs. The narrow top is attached to woven cloth hem. When used as a funerary item, the kandaure is placed on a stick near the deceased. In other rituals women will wear the kandaure during dances for healing. The beads are a sign of wealth, and the beadwork is a painstaking process and takes hours of work to complete. Size: 50" L x 11" Diameter (127 cm x 27.9 cm); 55" H (139.7 cm) on included custom stand.
