Item Details
Description
2 3/16 in. across the stars gold-plated star-shaped badge (light wear and tarnish to gold plate). A five-point star badge reading "City / Marshal / El Reno."

El Reno was formed just after the Land Rush of 1889, sitting just 25 miles west of Oklahoma City, it later became the Canadian County seat. El Reno and most of early Oklahoma was one of the most dangerous places in the United States for Lawmen. El Reno City marshal Thomas Johnson Nevitt was killed in a saloon on 20 September 1890 by a 20-year-old cowboy who had been shooting up the town on horseback. Noted lawman turned outlaw Alphonso "Al" Jennings settling in El Reno in 1890, he was the Canadian County prosecutor from 1892-1894, just before he formed the "Jennings Gang" of train-robbing outlaws in 1895. Wounded, captured, and sentenced to life in prison by 1897, Jennings later received a pardon and went on to run for governor and retired into the film industry in Los Angeles, CA before dying peacefully in 1961.
