Description
35 x 54 in. cotton banner with hand-drawn/stenciled text and illustration in ink (staining, scattered spotting, few small holes).Â
A building labeled "The Church of God," is depicted with the foundation of "One Body, One Spirit, One Lord, One Hope, One Faith, One Bap[tism], One Fa[ith]." The inside of the church features religious roles ("Elders, Deacons, Evangelist, Members"), actions ("praying, singing, reading"), and holy qualities ("awake, zealous, holy"). Outside of the church is a list of activities evidently deemed to be immoral, including: "Oyster Supper," "Donkey Parties," "Old Maid Sales," "Baby Shows," "Tackey [sic] Parties," "Human Societies," "Instrumental Music," and "Worldly Entertainment."
Church Revival BannersÂ
The late 19th and early 20th centuries continued the Third Great Awakening and saw the emergence of new Christian movements, such as Pentecostalism, Holiness denominations, and Fundamentalism, alongside a renewed vigor for tent revivals, evangelism, and global missionary work. Traditional denominations experienced challenges, and in some cases schisms, in part due to the response of traditional and fundamental beliefs to theological liberalism and cultural modernism. The hand-painted and printed banners offered as Lots 317-338 reflect the religious fervor and passionate beliefs fomenting in this period of change.
