Description
34 1/4 x 70 in. cotton banner with hand-drawn text and illustrations in ink and paint (dampstains). Initialed "JH" at lower right. "Cloth of Gold" printed twice in lower margin.
The banner shows "Eden" on the far left and "Heaven" on the far right with steps of "Hearing," "Believing," and "Obeying" as ways to follow the "Narrow Way." The center is dominated with a large pie chart showing the global population subdivided among "Christian," "Undecided," "Jews," "Universalist," "Infidelity," and "Heathen." The bottom with the "Broad Way" leading to "Destruction."
Church Revival Banners
The late 19th and early 20th centuries continued the Third Great Awakening and saw the emergence of new Christian movements, such as Pentecostalism, Holiness denominations, and Fundamentalism, alongside a renewed vigor for tent revivals, evangelism, and global missionary work. Traditional denominations experienced challenges, and in some cases schisms, in part due to the response of traditional and fundamental beliefs to theological liberalism and cultural modernism. The hand-painted and printed banners offered as Lots 317-338 reflect the religious fervor and passionate beliefs fomenting in this period of change.
