1936 Packard "Phantom" Boattail Custom - VIN: 1G1AY8766BS407374 - Offered Without Reserve - Unique one-off custom of Packard styling and Corvette performance | Titled as a 1981 Chevrolet | 350 Chevy Corvette V-8 engine with automatic transmissionPackard and Corvette automobiles could not be any more different when it comes to design, specs, and overall feel, but what one is lacking, the other makes up for it. Packards were built for elegance and the upper class, while Corvettes were mainly seen for speed and muscle. Looking to get the best of both worlds, a former Packard employee and master builder crafted this one-of-a-kind hand-built 1936 Packard “Phantom” boattail custom in the 1980s. Built on a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette chassis, the body was formed using fiberglass and original pre-WWII Packard sheet metal straight from the factory, according to a former owner. The exterior features some of the iconic cues of 1930s like a robust boattail style rear end, tall and bold chrome grille, and of course the Packard hood ornament leading the way. Painted in a striking red that helps bring out the hand-built lines and curves throughout the body, it reminds you of a time when things were carefully thought out and not messily thrown together in a factory. The paint is offset by four chrome wire wheels and a spare that is built into the side for display only. The rear end tilts back and allows for access to the black convertible top, and all the windows have been tinted to match the top.

While the exterior focuses on the styling from Packards, under the hood and in the cabin, you will find the main parts of the Corvette. According to previous owners, the small block 350 Chevy V-8 engine in the car was rebuilt in the ‘80s when the car was put together. With an engine like that, it might just make it one of the quickest “Packards” existing today. The engine is linked back to the Corvette automatic transmission which allows for anyone to drive. Also adding to its driving accessibility are the power disc brakes and power steering.

The interior is fitted with red cloth that stays cool on the hottest of summer days. The components and dash are untouched from the 1981 Corvette. The middle console houses the automatic shifter, five separate gauges, a Pioneer stereo, and the climate control center. The car is also equipped with a custom wood Corvette steering wheel and a tilt and telescopic column that allows for the driver to easily adjust the steering wheel to the perfect position. A former owner also noted the car was in a museum for an extended period of time and garnered much attention from people of all ages. Ready to the hit the open roads with the top down this summer, this one-off custom not only comes with elegance and speed, but also the title of being the only one in the world to own one.
