Item Details
Description
  • Title: Chinese Republic Wood and Stone Panel 1920s/30s
  • Decription: An intricate handmade work of wood and soapstone that depicts The Twenty-four Paragons of Filial Piety (Chinese: ????; pinyin: Èrshísì Xiào), a classic text of Confucian filial piety written by Guo Jujing (???)[1] during the Yuan dynasty (1260–1368). The text was extremely influential in the medieval Far East and was used to teach Confucian moral values. The scene depicts exemplar #22 “She Breastfed Her Mother-in-Law (????; R? G? Bù Dài) . The panel uses different colored soapstone pieced artistically to create a story. The soapstone pieces have been carved and etched to form clothing, leaves, hair and facial features. The carving has a considerable amount of detail, including the bark on the tree trunk and the fabric design on the one man’s jacket. The panel is framed with a dark elm wood frame and has old cast brass hangers at the top and bottom of the frame. These hangers are quite thick (1/8”) and heavy. There is an old paper label on the paper lined back. In cursive script are the handwritten words Made in China with the number “7”. The paper label is octagonal in red and white. MEASUREMENTS 18 ¾” tall -excluding brass hangers (47.6 cm) x 8 5/8” (21.9 cm) wide x ¾” (1.9 cm) thick. Weight 2 lb 7.3 oz (1115 g) CONDITION There are small cracks in the wood especially one between the main figures and the boulder. There are chips and cracks in some of the soapstone, especially the skirt of the seated figure. There is a gap between the frame and the background on the left; however it’s not very noticeable because the plaque has a backing and so you can’t see through it. There is wear and abrasions and couple of old chips on the black frame.
  • Size: 18 ¾” tall -excluding brass hangers (47.6 cm) x 8 5/8” (21.9 cm) wide x ¾” (1.9 cm) thick.
