Description

1890s - 1910s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese inkstone with recessed central grinding area and intentionally rough sides and bottom. Used for grinding of an inkstick on the surface of the stone. Very beautiful multicolored natural stone with play of gray, yellow and brown, very clever scholarly piece - well tamed central part surrounded by the wild energy of irregular shapes of the sides. Beautiful patina, traces of ink on the grinding surface. Wonderful object for scholars table, in excellent condition. Length 5 inches.
