Description
A cast iron Gamewell lighted fire alarm box mounted on its original cast iron Greek Corinthian order post that would have been deployed on a street corner so it could be seen from multiple directions, probably early 20th century, with later updates to the box. The firebox with pull down lever handle in cast aluminum is attached to the box door with plate marked "49" above the notation "Fire Alarm Station / the Gamewell Co. / Newton Mass.". The door with original lock has no key, so the interior has not been examined for completeness. The Greek pedestal with acanthus plinth over a fluted column leading to a band of scrolls over reverse acanthus decorations and mounted on a separate circular base. Note that there is a fitted door at the base of pedestal that was used to access the interior wiring to the firebox (single screw holds the door in place) - the interior of door is embossed with the number "709A1". The exterior of the unit with weathered paint but structurally sound and no damage - as previously stated, we cannot attest to the interior workings of the alarm as the box is locked without key. The box by itself measures 33"H (to top of light) x 12 1/2"W x 9"D - the pedestal measures 49"H x 15" diameter (at base) - total height of the unit is 82 inches. As the box is a separate unit, it can be removed and the outstanding cast iron pedestal can be repurposed and displayed for its classic artistic qualities.
