Illustrated with 14 etchings by Marty, one of his earliest illustrated works. Edition limited to 275 numbered copies. Numbered 67 of 200 on Arches paper. Jean de La Fontaine was a French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He was part of the famous quartet, Rue du Vieux Colombier, which consisted of La Fontaine, Racine, Boileau, and Molière. La Fontaine was recognized as one of the foremost men of letters in France. Andre Edward Marty, who illustrated the work, was a painter, engraver, etcher, woodcut artist, illustrator, and stage designer. He was a member of the Jury at the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in 1925 and he illustrated many important French books, including several by La Fontaine.The present work depicts the tale of Daphnis, a young shephard who falls in love with Alcimadure, only to be rejected because the latter finds him insincere.
