Abstract still life

19 1/2 x 27 1/4 inches
Framed: 27 1/2 x 35 3/4 inches
Marcel Janco was born in Romania and was one of the founding members of the Dada movement in Zurich in the early 20th Century, together with Tristan Tzara and other avant-garde artists who search for entirely new ways of making art, rejecting the formalist tradition that went before. He thus played an important role in the entire history of modernism in Europe. He became the leading exponent of Costructivism in Eastern Europe. With the rise of antisemitism before and during World War II, he emigrated to British Mandate Palestine, arriving in 1941. He instantly became one of the most famous artists in Israel, and went on to play an important role in the New Horizons group, founded after the establishment of the state. He won the most prestigious art awards in Israel and helped to found Ein Hod, a utopian art colony.
