The Agam Megillah (Scroll of Esther)
Serigraph on parchment, ca. 1980, signed and numbered 178 of 180.
Text is written in ink in square Ashkenazic script, arranged in 11 columns on 8 membranes.
Opening panel signed Agam and numbered 178/180; closing panel signed Agam; also signed Yaacov Agam in Hebrew and numbered 178/180. All other panels are likewise numbered 178/180.
Height: 19 5/8 inches
Agam's Megillah is one of the most beautiful and celebrated piece of Judaica of the Modern era. Produced on parchment, this limited edition Scroll of Esther includes the traditional Hebrew text and is adorned with a brilliantly colored abstract border. Although the imagery is largely abstract, it is possible to discern several elements from the Esther story, including a scene of Haman leading Mordechai on horseback and a pair of dice, a reference to both the lots that Haman drew to determine the exact date on which to annihilate the Jewish people as well as to the element of chance which is present in the Purim story.
