Description
Featured in this lot is this iron and bronze low port horse head bridle bit attributed to August Buermann. The bit shows a low port curb with iron shanks and three piece construction, with bronze horse head adornments attached to the sides of the shanks consistent with other Buermann horse head bits. Born in Hanover, Germany, Buermann apprenticed with a locksmith there before sailing to New York in 1864. He initially worked for Alexander Barclay, who was one of the earliest saddlery hardware manufacturers in Newark. In September of 1864, he joined the 9th infantry regiment of New Jersey Volunteers. The condition of this bridle bit is good; it shows oxidation and patina consistent with age and use. The measurements of this bridle bit are 6 3/4" x 6" x 1 3/4".
