after ANTONIO CANOVA (Italian 1757-1822) A PAIR OF GLAZED TERRACOTTA LIONS, ITALIAN, 20TH CENTURY, each with cobalt blue enameled mane and tail tip on a white enameled body, modeled life size in a recumbent position on a long rectangular unglazed base, with one vigilante while the other rests. Height: 22" Length: 49" Width: 17" Note: These lions are modeled after the white marble pair Canova carved in 1791 for the tomb of Pope Clemente XIII located in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome. Provenance: Private Collection, Pearland, Texas.
Condition
Good condition with expected kiln firing flaws and lion gazing outwards has an old hairline on its' right side starting from a kiln glaze firing flaw, normal surface buildup, and light environmental wear.?
