Description

A PAIR OF LOUIS XVI STYLE GILT BRONZE THREE LIGHT HUNTING HORN SCONCES, EACH STAMPED, 19TH CENTURY, each cast as a bow-tied ribbon suspending tasseled cords backplate, hung with oak leaf and acorn branches centering three French hunting horn form candle arms, above braided hide ending in a cloven stag's hoof and bound with a bow-ribbon, verso stamped "G & J," throughout, fitted for electricity. Height: 27 3/4" Width: 12 3/4" Depth: 8"? ? Note: These "hunt" themed bronze sconces are almost identical to the set of four that were originally ordered for the Petit Trianon's Grand Salon but instead were delivered to the Chateau de Versailles by the bronzier Claude Galle (French 1759-1815 master 1786) in December 1809. Today one pair hangs on the walls of the dining room for "retours de chasse in the King's interior apartments at Versailles. The other pair of the original order were probably sold by the government of the French Republic when some of the contents of several palaces were disbursed at auction towards the end of the 19th century. Another closely related set of eight can be located in Pavlovsk Palace, outside of St. Petersburg. The pair offered here differ only in their gilding, casting details, and size 27" height vs 42" height and that the original had two smaller hunting horn candle arms making them five-light vs these of three-light. An additional difference is the two left at Versailles have an applied leafy vine ringlet on the underside of each horn's nozzle.

Condition

Each in good condition with some expected oxidized areas, buildup, polish residue, and drilled for electricity. Simpson Galleries strongly encourages in-person inspection of items by the bidder.
