T. H. ROBSJOHN GIBBINGS (British/American 1905 - 1976) A BLOND MAPLE CHEST OF DRAWERS, WIDDICOMB FURNITURE CO, LABELED, MID 20TH CENTURY, of vertical rectangular form and a conforming rounded molding framed front, enclosing four drawers centering long rod style handles and top drawer opening to a divided interior with multi-compartment slide tray, above a conforming base on flat metal disc form feet, labeled on interior of drawer with a rectangular black and silver stenciled label "WIDDICOMB / designed by / T.H. ROBSJOHN-GIDDINGS," height: 39 1/4", width: 35 1/4", depth: 20 1/2"; together with a matching square form maple framed mirror, verso partial silver foil manufacturers label, height: 33 3/4", width: 33 3/4". Note: Terence (or Thomas) Harold Robsjohn-Gibbings was one of the award-winning pre-eminent designers in America during the 1930s, '40s, and '50s. His clients were some of the wealthiest and most influential of the day including the businesswoman/heiress Doris Duke, Hilda Boldt Weber, Alfred A. Knopf of publishing fame, and later the shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis. Starting in 1943 he was employed by the Widdicomb Furniture Company as a designer and his successes there led to him staying until 1956. His designs are famous for their clean lines and simplicity stemming from his interest in ancient Grecian furniture as well as the Art Deco style. Considered by many to be his?piece de resistance?of design is the furniture he had made for Hilda Boldt Weber's manse in Bel Air California - the Casa Encantada. Since sold off several times, the contents are fetching top prices when they come up for sale.?? Provenance: From the Estate of Joseph Gregg, San Antonio, Texas.
Condition
Good condition with expected light marks, some scratches, dings, and general light wear from use and age. Mirror is in good condition with some light surface wear on corners.
