Each with branded mark "GL" on back rail, likely for Gabriel Leaver, Savannah, circa 1790, each with arched crest, pierced ribbon backs, each with central rosette, upholstered slip seats, tapered square legs with stretchers, matching period slip seats also stamped "GL", one arm and three side, armchair.

Provenance: Accompanied by copy of letter outlining history of descent in the Waring family of Charleston and Savannah. The chairs were purchased directly from a Mrs. Waring and are thought to have the following line of descent: Dr. William Waring, who moved from Savannah to Charleston, to his son Dr. James J. Waring, to his son Josiah W. Waring, to his son Anthony J. Waring, to his son Anthony J. Waring Jr.. The letter notes "the old Waring house was at the corner of Perry and Bull Streets." Condition: Armchair II (with slip seat II), rear stiles spliced from arm joints up, crest rail replaced, minor cracks at tops of front legs; side chair III (slip seat V), minor chip and loss at back of one slat, one front leg ended out 8 inches and with patch and repair at top, cross stretcher probably replaced; side chair VIII (slip seat IV) with 7-1/2 inch splice repair to crest rail, break and repair to one rear stile with associated patch, cracks and repairs at top of front legs; side chair VI (slip seat VI) with break and repair to one rear stile at joint with seat rail, break and repair to one side stretcher, cracks and repairs at top of front legs; all chairs refinished with replaced seat blocking, typical surface wear and flaws consistent with age and use.
